Having already been given $100 worth of Dine & Discover vouchers, NSW residents are set to keep feasting on free food, although there’s a catch.
While the government has announced a new complementary $100 worth of vouchers for meals, the flood has to be enjoyed in the Sydney CBD, can only be used on a Friday and there are only 500,000 of them to go around, you won’t automatically receive one.
Those successful will receive four vouchers worth $25 each, but unlike the Dine & Discover vouchers they can all be spent on the same bill if you choose. You will be able to apply for and access your vouchers through the Service NSW app, with more details to come on how exactly to put yourself in line to snap one up.
It has been confirmed that the vouchers can be spent on food, although some outlets are reporting that they may also be may be able to be used on entertainment.
This initiative is being called TGIF (Thank God it’s Friday) and it comes after cities such as Melbourne and Brisbane have already made similar moves to reignite their Friday nights. TGIF is expected to roll out before Summer.
The investment is worth approximately $50 million and is aiming to pump some life back into Sydney Friday nights.
NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet commented: “We have listened to businesses and know that it’s time to make Friday’s fun again and ensure the Sydney CBD doesn’t just survive but thrives.”
“It’s about making Friday’s fantastic and fun and at the same time helping the Sydney CBD which has been hit hardest by COVID with a reduction in CBD workers and the absence of overseas visitors for more than a year.”
Gabriel Metclaf, CEO of Committee, the think tank behind reigniting nightlife in Kings Cross, suggested that you consider spending your voucher on a long lunch.
“In these tough economic times, it’s practically a civic duty.”
“We call on the good people of NSW to support their CBD restaurants and use these new vouchers. Have one meal for yourself and one for the country.”
