There has been interesting travel development noticed in the US as their domestic travel has mostly returned to normality, but daily housekeeping in hotels doesn’t appear to have returned with it.
The practice of reduced routine housekeeping became standard during the height of the pandemic and for obvious reasons faced little opposition. However, even as travel has returned, daily housekeeping seems to have largely made way in place of disinfection of shared spaces and more intensive cleaning in between stays of guests.
Consumers don’t seem thrilled about this with social media complaints ranging from those who view this as hotels attempting to maintain their rates while offering a lesser service and others who see this as traditional hotels shifting towards the self-service model of rental platforms such as Airbnb.
While most hotels seem to have quietly cutback their services, the Hilton has rather declared housekeeping to now be an ‘on-demand’ option, releasing a statement that said: “guests have told us that they have varying levels of comfort with someone entering their rooms after they have checked in.”
It remains to be seen how this will operate in practice or how other hotels will respond.
