Opera Australia soprano Jane Ede tells Explore why Hamilton Island in the Whitsundays is her favourite holiday destination in Australia.
“Hamilton Island is a really special place for me. Early in our relationship, my husband Malcolm and I took a vacation there. He suggested we go parasailing and while we were floating up in the air – with the waves sparkling in the sunshine and a bird’s-eye view over the green trees of the island – he proposed. I was so surprised and delighted that I spontaneously exclaimed: ‘Oh, well done, Mr Ede!’
“Now we take our daughter there for holidays and it’s our favourite place … We have a little routine. We load up our plates at the buffet breakfast, spend all morning on the beach paddleboarding and building sandcastles, have a lazy lunchtime nap, do a family activity in the afternoon, like hiring a boat to explore the islands, and then we finish on the veranda of one of the marina restaurants for a sunset cocktail and some boat-watching.”
