The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has stated it is experiencing “unprecedented” demand for passport renewals and enquiries.
The department is currently advising it will take at least six weeks to renew a passport but many people have been reporting the process taking longer.
The ABC reported that more than 1.1 million passports have already issued this financial year, with the majority of those since international borders opened in November.
If you need a passport urgently, priority processing costs an additional $225 on top of the renewal fee.
