First there was the Empty Esky movement. Then Explore’s own Give the Bush a Break. Throughout bushfires and the pandemic, Australians have shown the best of their generous spirits.
Today, as travel has again got its back to the wall, ideas have sprung up to make travel safe and accessible.
One of the best is the “Covid restriction holiday swap Australia” Facebook group, which has 5000 members and regularly features offers from people who have been stranded by lockdown.
On the one hand, it’s a message board of misery. On the other, it’s a way of ensuring both operators and those who want a break get what they need.
“Jindabyne – due to lock down can’t go,” wrote Ace. “Purchased 2 nights non refundable accommodation at Jindabyne for $2070 negotiable to reduce, 3 bedroom town house. Let me know if … interested.”
Brianna wrote: “Hi there! We had accommodation booked to stay at the beautiful Bay & Basin Boutique Hotel in Jervis Bay last year, however, due to border restrictions we have not been able to rebook … We have $900 credit with the hotel through booking.com that we would like to sell for a lower price.”
And Kathy wrote: “Due to the latest COVID cluster no longer off to QLD, looking for NSW/ACT options anyone got anything free for the first week of July 21?”
Explore has its own free swap holidays service on Facebook. Feel free to use it: facebook.com/Swapholiday
