It has become a battle of the budget airlines with Virgin Australia attempting to match Jetstar’s no-frills offerings.
In an overhaul of its economy airfares, Virgin has announced three new fare types: Economy Lite, Economy Choice and Economy Flex. The Lite fare will not include checked baggage, which was previously standard with Virgin’s economy fares.
Economy Lite passengers will also have to pay if they want to choose their own seat and will be unable to bid for an upgrade using the airline’s UpgradeMe service, but they will accrue Velocity frequent flyer points. Lite passengers will face an $80 fee for flight changes made up to the day before their flight and they will lose their fare if they wish to change to another flight on the day of departure.
The Economy Choice and Economy Flex fares include checked luggage and the ability to upgrade.
