From January 2023, the historic Italian city of Venice will require day visitors to make reservations and pay a fee to visit. The move comes as local authorities find ways to curb the number of tourists outnumbering that of residents.
Officials revealed the new rules will go into effect on January 16. Tourists who opt not to stay in local hotels will have to pay a fee ranging from 3 to 10 euros per person depending on advance bookings, seasonality and the number of other visitors.
About 80 per cent of all tourists to Venice are daytrippers. In 2019, the last full year of tourism before the pandemic, some 19 million people visited the city just over the day, providing just a fraction of the revenue from those staying for at least one night. The reservation-and-fee approach has been discussed for years but is finally being implemented.
