Guide to Asia

With an abundance of exotic destinations, Asia has long been a popular destination for Australians for decades.

Singapore, The Lion City is famous for its shopping, beautiful hotels, delicious hawker food and family-friendly atmosphere – perfect for pre- and post-long-haul holidays.

Malaysia is one of the most popular countries to visit. With cities including Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi, the country has a rich colonial history, stunning beaches and lovely wildlife.

Other tropical destinations like Thailand and the Philippines are known for their idyllic lifestyle. The Filipino islands such as Boracay are famous for their white sandy beaches and snorkelling.

Australians should also visit bustling places to visit include Hong Kong and Shanghai with its great shopping and fast-paced culture.  

Japan’s north and south islands vary in climates and culture. From the sub-tropical Okinawa as well as Kyoto and Tokyo, which are famous for their vibrant shopping districts and beautiful Shinto temples.

China

For a country as vast and multi-faceted as China, several places feature in every bucket list. They include the Great Wall of China, the Terracotta Army, the great pandas in Chengdu, the Forbidden City in Beijing and The Bund in Shanghai.

Hong Kong

Hong Kong comprises many areas: Kowloon, the island CBD, Victoria Peak (a must), and beach villages Aberdeen and Stanley (with its vibrant sprawling market) on the other side. Great street markets and fashion shopping. The Star Ferry from Kowloon to Hong Kong Island is also a must.

Shanghai

Shanghai is a blend of ancient, colonial and sophisticated architecture. Pudong’s space-age buildings overlook the winding river and are best seen from The Bund, more than a kilometre of esplanade. The 16th-century Old Town is delightful with temples, tea-houses and great dim sum places.

Best for: Everyone.

Tianjin (Beijing)

Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City and the 15th-century Temple of Heaven are high on everyone’s list. Hit the markets for clothing, shoes, silks, luggage and handbags. After all this, treat yourself to a foot massage! With an extra day, the Great Wall is not to be missed.

Indonesia

Indonesia has long been a popular destination because of its complex culture, superb waters and gorgeous landscape. Bali remains the country’s most popular drawcard offering something for everyone from kid-friendly water theme parks, monkey gardens to artisan shops in Ubud. But visitors should not forget the magnificent Borobodur temples which are just a couple of hours’ drive from Semarang and the 100-metre Sendang Gile waterfall in the Mount Rinjani National Park in Lombok.
