24 hours drive from Perth and 18 hours drive from Darwin, the red earth meets the sea in the former sleepy pearl town of Broome. Nowadays Broome is a magical destination, a melting pot of cultures and cuisines, with an accessory of quirky attractions match.
Attractions
No trip to Broome is complete without a camel convoy ride down Cable Beach. Ride as the sun sets over the Indian Ocean and the landscape turns to silhouette. A gateway to the west Kimberley, Broome is the town base for Horizontal Falls, where two narrow gorges of McLarty Range showcase a sideways waterfall as rapid water pushes through the gap. So remote, the Falls are not accessible by car and are best viewed by air or by boat. Continue the appreciation of the prehistoric and explore the Rosebuck Bay coastline via commercial hovercraft and find some ancient dinosaur footprints.
Stay
You may be in a remote area, but that doesn’t mean comforts are compromised. For a luxury experience in Broome you can check in to either a villa or luxury tent at The Billi in Cable Beach. Bringing the outdoors in, the grounds offer tropical surroundings and raised timber walkways, with some of the villas being equipped with an outdoor rain shower. Moonlight Bay suites provide fully self-contained apartments in a central location, nearby to Chinatown Shopping precinct and a short stagger across the road from Matso’s Broome Brewery & Restaurant. Just over an hour’s drive out of Broome sits Eco Beach Resort offering garden, ocean view and oceanfront eco villas.
Dine
Despite its remoteness from the world, Broome has managed to attract a range of multicultural cuisines reflecting its multicultural past with 57 languages spoken in the Shire of Broome. The Mango Place is an outdoor café in Broome serving Italian pizza, beef and mango pie and mango liqueur cake in a cabana style environment with dirt floors, plastic chairs and thatched pavilions.
