The red earth of central Australia meets the whitest sands of Esperance in the Region of Outback Western Australia. Find your fortune in the gold rush town of Kalgoorlie, Wheatbelt, Wave Rock and Esperance.
Attractions
Wave Rock is a major drawcard for the tourists. Located at the end of a 340km drive through picturesque farmland from Perth, the rock is a natural formation resembling a breaking wave of pure granite. It sounds like the invention of Willy Wonka, but a 600 metre long bubble-gum pink actually exists in Outback WA. Esperance Pink Lake Hillier, offlimits to walkers, can still be viewed in all its glory by air. Seven kilometres away, Pink Lake turns a rosy pink in certain weather conditions and can be viewed by walking to the Pink Lake lookout. Two and a half times the size of Uluru, Mount Augustus is the world’s largest monolith. At least 2 days’ drive from Perth, the summit reaches 750 metres high and can be seen from the 49 kilometre four wheel drive only base trail or from Emu Hill Lookout. Trekking back to civilisation, the gold mining town of Kalgoorlie offers a prospect of historic architecture and Australian gold rush history. Find your fortune in one of the many fossicking tours in Kalgoorlie Boulder.
Stay
No outback Australia holiday is complete without the experience of staying on a remote outback station, and The Gascoyne and Murchison region have many on offer, including Kirkalocka Station, Wooleen Station, Mellenbye Station and Glenburgh Station Stay. Likewise, no outback holiday would be complete without breaking your journey with an overnight stay in an outback hotel and the Cuballing Hotel built in 1891 just off highway 120 between Narrogin and Yornaning. Heading back towards the coast, the Esperance Chalet Village has a selection of self contained cabins, chalets and shacks to choose from, all within walking distance of the pristine white sanded, turquoise water beaches of the Esperance coastline.
Dine
When in the Outback, an outback hotel pub meal is a must do, and the Grand Hotel Kookynie with a town of only 13 permanent residents is a mirage in the desert offering cold beer and hearty meals.
