As Australia’s only island state, Tasmania is arguably its most isolated. Separated from the mainland by a body of water known as the Bass Strait, it also has the smallest land area and population size of any state (around 500,000 inhabitants).

In fact, its land area is roughly that of Ireland or West Virginia in the USA!

But don’t be fooled by its small size. Tasmania is rich in history and culture, and packed with countless photogenic natural attractions.

Capital city Hobart boasts a fascinating convict history, divine cuisine and interesting art galleries.

Over at Launceston and Tasmania’s North, you’ll find heritage estates, fantastic wineries and rich farmland.

And on its East Coast, the iconic Freycinet National Park occupies most of the Freycinet Peninsula. Here, travellers can expect beautiful white beaches, pink granite mountains and tranquil bays.

Over 45 percent of Tasmania is national park territory as well. So gear up for exploring highlands carved by glaciers, pristine beaches and verdant rainforests.

Don’t forget to say hi to the infamous Tasmanian devil − the world’s largest carnivorous marsupial. This shy, nocturnal creature can be found throughout the island, especially its coastal regions and mountain ranges.
