Ambitious plans to allow Australian holidaymakers to Singapore without quarantine are being seriously considered by the Federal Government , with digital passports showing passengers have ben vaccinated.
The bold move, being discussed by both Singapore and Australian governments, is vital for both sides. Singapore depends on foreign visitors and Australia is keen for both tourists and students.
Under the plan, vaccinated Aussies and Singaporeans would be able to travel without a mandated two-week hotel quarantine.
Singapore has worked hard to bring down numbers and still has stronger regulations about wearing masks than Australia.
The island republic could also help bring home stranded Australians by using Singapore as a quarantine stopover. There are still some 40,000 Aussies stranded overseas.
Perth is seen as a possible first step with only a five-hour flight time to Changhi Airport.
New Zealand is also involved, though so far has yet to agree to accept Aussies. Under current policies, only New Zealanders are able to fly into Australia, while bypassing quarantine measures
“I’m scheduled to travel to Singapore in the coming months and this will be a key topic of discussions as we seek to explore a travel bubble with Singapore,” Trade and Tourism Minister Dan Tehan told Nine news outlets.
