It may be one of Italy’s most stunning beach resorts, but Sorrento’s mayor has decided sashaying bodies in revealing swimsuits are lowering the tone of the town.
Massimo Coppola has declared war on “widespread indecorous behaviour”.
According to The Times, he said bikinis and skimpy shorts will now incur fines of up to $700.
He said bare flesh damaged the image of the town and upset the locals, and would now incur fines of up to €500 ($700).
The mayor of Sorrento claimed the exposed skin is offensive to locals.
The act has sparked debate online with some describing it as “strange”, while others favoured the mayor’s rule.
Mr Coppola is not alone in trying to stem the rising tide of bare flesh.
The southern Italian town of Praia a Mare fines people for walking barefoot, while in Rapallo, northern Italy, there are street signs about dress standards.
Spain and Mallorca also impose fines on those who flout the no-swimwear regulations with fines of up to $900.
