Settled in the late 1930s, the first vineyards were planted in early 1840. Many towns here were built to service the nearby Burra copper mines as well.
Today, some of Australia’s finest white grape varieties like Riesling grow here. If you prefer your reds, the Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz are world-standard too.
The best way to enjoy your vino is by following the Clare Valley Riesling Trail, which spans 35 kilometres and connects the cellar doors, gourmet food producers and attractions in the region.
Attractions
Our favourite cellar doors along the Clare Valley Riesling Trail are Sevenhill Cellars (with the historic St Aloysius’ Church) , Annies Lane, Shut the Gate and Crabtree.
For some (really) ancient history, explore Red Banks Conservation Park. Its ‘’Landscapes of Change” interpretive walking trail takes you on the same path as prehistoric giants who lived there thousands of years back.
Love discovering historical properties? Bungaree Station was the headquarters of one of Australia’s most successful sheep flocks, and is still a working farm today. There’s also Martindale Hall, a Georgian-style sandstone mansion with a sprawling pastoral estate.

Glamping enthusiasts will love Bukirk Glamping, a mere 5-minute drive from the Clare township with unique bell tents located amongst scenic farmland.
In Burra’s town centre, The Pig and Whistle is a lovely historic house with comfortable rooms and winter facilities like a slow combustion fire and electric blankets.
If you’re travelling with family, Clary Central Motel contains various room types like self-contained family rooms, twin rooms and rooms for the disabled.
Or splurge on Skillogalee House at Sevenhill, a luxurious self-contained accommodation in a stylish residence.
Dine
Fresh bakes await at Clare Rise Bakery 1895, a humble family-owned business that does yummy pastries, cakes and artisan breads using local produce.
Another gem in the Clare Valley food scene is Slate Restaurant at Pikes Wines − awarded ‘Cellar Door with the Best Food’ by Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine.
At Clare Valley’s Main Street, Indii of Clare serves up delectable main courses from all over India, as well as wines, gin and single malt whiskeys.
We’re also fans of Terroir Auburn, with its inspiring, earthy dishes sourced from seasonal Clare Valley produce.
