Located in the remote southwest wilderness, far beyond the road’s end, is a remote harbour called Port Davey.
This is my ultimate holiday destination.
I first became familiar with this far corner of Tasmania’s world heritage area over 25 years ago, when I worked the coast as a commercial abalone diver.
Since then, I have been privileged to return hundreds of times to explore the area aboard a custom-built expedition vessel. Every visit, I see or learn something new – and that’s the appeal of this wild place.
Southwest Tasmania’s rugged landscapes and pristine waterways, best explored by boat and on foot, are largely untouched by humankind.
Here, away from the distractions of phone reception and everyday life, days are guided by time, tide and weather.
There are seemingly endless tracks to stroll, mountains to climb, and beaches to comb – and you’re almost certain to have it all to yourself. I like to top off the days’ adventures back aboard vessel Odalisque with a Tasmanian pinot and a feast of fresh seafood.
