As part of the Darwin Festival in August, the city’s Playhouse will be transformed into a tennis court for the heart-warming story of Wiradjuri-Australian tennis legend Evonne Goolagong, as told in Sunshine Super Girl (August 12-13).
The theatrical work, which was written and directed by Yorta Yorta/Gunaikurnai theatre maker Andrea James, is a celebration of the triumph of spirit and passion over adversity, and a tribute to a woman whose sporting prowess continues to inspire a nation.
It promises to be a unique theatre-going experience where audiences can get up close to the action with exclusive on-stage courtside seats.
In one mega night of music under the stars, the National Indigenous Music Awards on August 6 recognise some big names on the Australian music scene and highlight up-and-coming talent. Thelma Plum and King Stingray will lift the night into a celebration of what has been a huge year for First Nations music.
Also not to be missed is the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair (August 5-7), the Australian Ballet’s Regional Tour Ballet Gala (August 18-19) and British indie pop sensation Arlo Parks (August 7).
When is Darwin Festival?
Across 18 amazing tropical days and nights of music, theatre, comedy and dance, the Darwin Festival will feature a packed program from August 4-21.
