Disney Theatrical Productions and the NSW Government have announced the hit musical adaptation of Mary Poppins will be opening in May 2022 at the Sydney Lyric theatre in Pyrmont.
The timeless classic of children’s literature, Mary Poppins, was penned by the Australian-British writer PL Travers in 1934 and transformed into a Walt Disney film in 1964.
The musical production will give the NSW visitor economy a boost, said Stuart Ayres, Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney.
“We anticipate that the production will generate almost $23 million in direct visitor spend over the 21-week season,” said Mr Ayres. Mary Poppins “flew into my heart when I first saw the movie and read PL Travers”. The original music and lyrics by Richard M Sherman and Robert B Sherman include the timeless favourites “Jolly Holiday”, “Step in Time”, “Feed the Birds” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”.
New songs and additional music and lyrics are by the Olivier award-winning team of George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, including the now celebrated classics “Practically Perfect” and “Anything Can Happen”.
Tickets go on sale in August 2021.
