What's good about it? Bamberg is located on the Regnitz river in northern Bavaria, Germany, close to its confluence with the Main River. Founded in 902 CE, it's a medieval-looking city with its old town declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Best for: Bamberg's beautiful architecture is best explored on foot. First, stop by the iconic Altes Rathaus (old town hall), built on its own island in the middle of a double-arched bridge over the Regnitz, and marvel at the intricate frescoes on its exterior. Then visit the magnificent 11th-century Bamberg Cathedral featuring four imposing towers and numerous stone carvings.
Best time to visit: May to September offers warmer temperatures and less rain, or visit in November and December to enjoy the city's Christmas markets.
