Cruise companies are gearing up to mark a key World War II anniversary - the Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied France in June, 1944. Viking Cruises has announced a new Paris and D-Day 80th anniversary voyage for the 2024 river season, with departures from March through November.
The 12-day sailings from London to Paris will commemorate Operation Overlord and the historic battles of Normandy, which culminated in the liberation of Western Europe. The itinerary will take guests to historic World War II sites, including the Churchill War Rooms, where the D-Day landings were prepared in England.
Avalon Waterways meanwhile has a 15-day Grand France (WWII History) cruise planned for May 28-June 11 which includes the opportunity to visit battlefields and the Normandy landing beaches and an onboard D-Day commemoration ceremony on June 6.
It seems only yesterday Australians were travelling in their thousands to Turkey to mark the centenary of the Gallipoli landings in 2015. Lest we forget.
