David Walsh decided to open Moo Brew - the brewery of Hobart's architecturally marvellous and visually arresting Museum of Old and New Art - on a whim.
He was in Europe - semi-drunk (or so the story goes) - found a beautiful bottle of beer, but couldn't think of an ale nice enough to fill it with. So he decided to make his own, launching Moo Brew in 2005, which has since become a bit of a mecca for zythophiles heading to Hobart.
And while no trip to the Tasmanian capital is complete without a trip to MONA, the same beer connoisseurs can now get a taste of Walsh's genius smack bang in the city.
The team behind the brewery has just opened a taphouse called Manky Sally's at 25 Salamanca Place - four minutes walk from the wharf where the MONA ferry departs. Expect stunning interiors including a feature wall with 3000 LED-light-studded bottles, and ales, lagers and pilsners good enough to fill them. moobrew.com.au
