Step aside Sydney and Melbourne. The World's 50 Best Hotels list has been announced, with just one Australian entry on it, and it's not from the NSW or the Victorian capital.

Located in the heart of Brisbane's achingly cool James Street precinct, The Calile has been ranked number 12 in the world - no small feat considering that not a single eatery in Australia makes it to the World's 50 Best Restaurants list, run by the same UK-based media outfit. Having stayed at the hotel, we can confidently say its chic pool and Amalfi-meets-Palm-Springs interiors are totally deserving of the honour.

But if you want to travel further afield, here's our pick of five other hotels on the list that are worth flying for: the Passalacqua - complete with Baroque elegance - in Lake Como at number one; the lofty Upper House in Hong Kong at number four; the pared back Park Hyatt in Kyoto at number 30; the out-there Atlantis the Royal in Dubai at number 44; and the game-changing designer hotel Equinox in New York at number 48.
