Best for: Start by walking the cobblestone streets of the medieval Old Town to admire the well-preserved walls of the city. Visit the 12th-century Romanesque Cathedral of St Tryphon containing 14th-century frescoes and artefacts. A well-recognised landmark on the Bay of Kotor, reachable by boat, is the island of Gospa od Skrpjela, or Our Lady of the Rocks. This tiny manmade islet, created with rocks placed by sailors over centuries, is home to a church where you can admire the 17th-century paintings of Tripo Kokolja.
Best time to visit: Between April and September when sunshine is virtually guaranteed.
