No one puts Dubai in the corner when it comes to size. The capital of bling is home to the world's tallest building (Burj Khalifa), the deepest swimming pool (Deep Dive Dubai, where you can plunge 60 metres below the surface of water) and the highest Ferris wheel (Ain Dubai, which doesn't spin anymore, perhaps - ironically - due to the the sheer size of it). So it's only natural for the emirate to vie for the world's tallest hotel. Enter the 82-storey Ciel Tower, which will open in the second quarter of 2024 and claim that title. There will be a bar on the 76th floor and an observatory on the 82nd storey, so it's worth putting this hotel on your must-visit list for sweeping views, even if you're not checking into a room there. cieltower.net
If your idea of the quintessential romantic island getaway is the Maldives, then it's time to challenge that perception. The Islands of Tahiti are not only closer to Australia than the Maldives, they're far more affordable and less crowded, too. And if that's not enough to convince you to book a flight to this French Polynesian gem, then here's the clincher: located on the island of Moorea, a mere 25 minutes by ferry from Tahiti, Niu Beach Hotel is opening in March this year, offering just 16 bungalows, perched along the impossibly pristine Haapiti beach, with crystal-clear waters and swaying palms. niubeachmoorea.com
What can you expect from a hotel owned by British fashion designer Kit Kemp and husband Tim? Marvellous designer touches at every turn, of course. From giant sculptures suspended from the ceiling in the bars to bright-coloured bedheads set against the backdrop of bespoke wallpapers in the guest rooms, every corner at the 10 hotels owned by the couple in New York and London is designed to leave you mesmerised. And their new establishment, Warren Street Hotel in NYC's Tribeca district, is about to continue the tradition when it opens next month. firmdalehotels.com
A distinct sense of calm and elegance is about to descend on Hanover Square, the oldest square in London's posh Mayfair neighbourhood, when the second Mandarin Oriental (the first one is located right next to Hyde Park) opens in the city in the northern spring this year. The hotel will be home to 50 exquisitely designed rooms and suites and a range of excellent eateries (from contemporary Korean establishment Dosa to modern Japanese restaurant Akira Back), but what we can't wait to check out is the hotel's state-of-the-art spa, with a 25-metre heated swimming pool, sauna, vitality pools and steam rooms. mandarinoriental.com
The Standard, Singapore
There's no dearth of striking hotels with cutting-edge comfort in Singapore, but when this property opens in the city-state in the third quarter of this year, it's bound to raise the bar. Expect achingly cool rooms - the kind that draw the most fashion-savvy guests to Standard outposts around the world: from New York City's Meatpacking District to London's Kings Cross. Not to mention, the now-mandatory rooftop pool and bar we have come to expect of Standard hotels. standardhotels.com
Scattered around the world - from Venice to Marrakech - Aman hotels are the last word in luxury, with eye-watering prices to match. Now, the group is launching a sibling brand. The first of the 12 projects will open in March in Tokyo, with clean lines, a neutral palette of colours and expansive windows framing city views. Janu means "soul" in Sanskrit, so get ready to experience the soul of the hotel's futuristic neighbourhood, Azabudai Hills. Just don't forget to carry your credit card. janu.com
If the semi-transparent glass facade - designed by Portuguese architect Joao Paciencia - doesn't take your breath away, the sweeping views of Lisbon from this hotel's rooftop bar certainly will. Expected to open in the third quarter of this year, ME Lisbon will feature 213 rooms with avant-garde flourishes, a state-of-the-art wellness sanctuary complete with a heavenly spa, and more than 600 square metres of space for meeting and events. Meaning you'll be right at home here, whether you're in Lisbon for work or leisure. melia.com
