One of the country's most significant celebrations of First Nations culture, Parrtjima - A Festival in Light, is returning to Alice Springs next month (April 12-21), with a stellar line-up of events.

Head to the MacDonnell Ranges after dark to see a light show colourfully illuminate almost two kilometres of the 300 million-year-old landscape, or make a beeline for the Alice Springs Desert Park, where you can find the 600-kilogram, six-metre-tall wandering puppet, Arelhe Urrperle, sharing Arrernte stories.

There are plenty of new things to check out in Alice Springs outside of the festival, too. Enjoy a delicious meal at the remote town's first Indonesian restaurant, Warung Makan Alice, which opened on Hartley Street in January this year, or - for a deeper cultural immersion - sign up for a day trip or an overnight camping adventure in East or West MacDonnell Ranges with recently launched tour company Red Earth Roaming. parrtjimaaustralia.com.au; instagram.com/warungmakanalice; redearthroaming.com.au
