In fact, half the entries on the 10-strong list are European, with Turkey's Istanbul Airport at number 2; Germany's Munich Airport at number 3; another London haunt, Heathrow, at number 5; and Rome-Fiumicino International Airport at number 7. Here are the two most common things that can go wrong and what you can do to alleviate the stress.
1. Missed flights: "Always leave enough time to go through security, or make your connection if there's a layover," says Compare the Market's head of travel insurance, Warren Duke.
2. Lost luggage: "Flag it with the airline before you leave the airport and see if there's any compensation they could provide, and contact your insurance provider ASAP," says Duke.
