What's good about it? Overlooking Lake Zurich and spanning the banks of the Limmat River, Switzerland's largest city is often cited as one of Europe's most liveable. It is the country's financial heart, but the city also boasts an impressive arts scene, with its roots in the avant-garde Dada movement, which originated here in 1916.
Best for: Visit the city's Rathaus (Town Hall) dating back to the 1690s; the grand Fraumunster church; and St Peter's Church, which boasts the largest church clock face in Europe. Then head to the Kunsthaus museum, where Monet's enormous water lily painting is housed. You can also become a Maitre Chocolatier during a chocolate-making workshop at the Lindt headquarters.
The best time to visit: June to August is ideal for festivals and outdoor activities, while December and January are the best months for holiday festivities.
