Organising a holiday is now more complex than ever. In our new column, we put the questions you ask us to the experts.

Peter Hosper, AFTA member and co-founder and CEO of The Travel Authority Group answers your questions below.

Q: What’s the best type of holiday for a family with two young kids and our in-laws (who are in their 60s)?

For an intergenerational holiday like this, cruising has it hands down. You’ve got plenty of kid-friendly facilities on board, lots of social interaction (and babysitting options!) and just as much for the parents and grandparents to do. A cruise also has the benefit of unpacking just the once, while getting to visit lots of locations – and then, there’s the value.

The COVID-recovery market means there are some fabulous deals around, many of which have incentives from onboard credits to flight credits. Forward sales of cruise are remarkably high and there are some great options available. So even with everyone piling in to take up the domestic and international capacity, there’s a lot of capacity across the globe that needs to be sold so this is one of the best times to get a good deal.

Don’t limit yourself – it could be a cruise out of the Bahamas or Europe or a domestic alternative. Keep your mind open and have a chat to your travel agent about what is most likely to work for you and your family.

Even with all the COVID restrictions, cruise is a very well-organised sector.  Have a look. Have a think.

Q: What are the travel insurance options that have COVID cover included to deal with medical bills overseas and the costs of quarantine?

Insurance is one of the most complex of areas which you absolutely need to sort before booking travel. Many of the policies sold in Australia at the moment provide that, if you’re diagnosed with COVID prior to your departure, your cancellation and amendment costs are covered. Then it starts to get a lot more specific so it’s really important that:

1. You get the policy that is right for where and when you want to travel.

2. You know exactly what you’re covered for, which is where we help as your travel adviser. It’s constantly changing and we can help you make the right choices.
