Temperatures around the country are about to drop, and - thanks to a stellar calendar of festivals - you can either celebrate the cold weather or come up with an escape plan. Start off in South Australia, where the longest running culinary festival, Tasting Australia, will be held from May 3-12, packed with more than 150 events around the state.
Then turn your gaze towards the Apple Isle, where the Australian Musical Theatre Festival will be held from May 15-19. Further south, while Dark Mofo is on pause at large this year, key festival events will still go ahead - from a lavish gala at Mona on June 14 to the Nude Solstice Swim in Hobart's River Derwent on June 21.
Then - in a complete departure from short days and chilly nights - make your way in Northern NSW (just 15 minutes north of Byron Bay), where the three-day Splendour in the Grass festival will be kicking off on July 19. tastingaustralia.com.au; amtf.org.au; darkmofo.net.au; splendourinthegrass.com
Local immersion
While in Hobart, don't forget to drop in at the Henry Jones Art Hotel, which is well known for showcasing Tasmanian art and promoting local artists. And its latest experience, Palawa Connection: Stories with Allan Mansell, continues that journey. Taking place every second weekend, the two-hour experience features the local Indigenous artist sharing insights on the state's history and the region's Aboriginal culture through the prism of his own stories and artworks.
Topics of discussions will range from the impact that being part of the Stolen Generation has on Mansell's life to his journey to printmaking, a medium he now uses extensively to tell Indigenous stories. Guests of the hotel can sign up for the experience for free, while non-guests can take part for $20. thehenryjones.com
